Higher Education in Fashion Buying and Marketing – New Programme starting in September 2017

The three-year Higher Education in Fashion Buying programme that is offered to the students is developed, delivered, assessed and awarded by Marbella Design Academy.

When awarded your undergraduate qualification by Marbella Design Academy, equivalent to BA degree standard, then you can on the basis of your portfolio apply for a Master’s degree at any university of you choice.

As a Fashion Buyer, you are specialising within the fashion buying side of the Fashion Design industry. You will be taught the application of art, creativity and aesthetics to clothing and other lifestyle accessories as well as specialising in buying the right garments to the right purchasing price.  Additionally you will be taught marketing specific to Fashion Buying, how to market yourself and how to set up and successfully run a Fashion business. Fashion Design is global business and one of the largest employers of the world workforce. This exciting, lucrative and growing market sector has many rich employment opportunities for our Fashion Buyer graduates including branding and marketing. The Higher Education in Fashion Buying and Marketing programme offered at Marbella Design Academy is designed to accomplish high academic achievement in an exciting exploration of fashion buying and marketing.

The first year of the programme will cover basic skills such as freehand drawing, design history, fashion illustration, computer aided design, marketing and fashion buying.

The second year of study will build and enhance your existing skills with further exploration of the creative fashion design process, trend awareness, marketing and industry projects.

In your final year a work experience module gives the opportunity to test your skills base in a contemporary fashion environment within the fashion buying industry. An industry-ready portfolio with a prediction of the next year trends, colour and styles will be produced with styled photography shots of your ideas for the coming year`s collections and selling targets. This will provide you with your unique selling point to achieve a position within the fashion buying industry on graduation.

FASB41 FUNDAMENTALS OF DESIGN

Fundamentals of Creative Design

Describes and explores the main issues involved in the professional design field. It also introduces research methodology, learning, creating and communication skills. Conceptual development processes and various presentation techniques are taught in order to provide the students with the necessary skills to express their ideas in a professional manner.

Fundamentals of Fashion Design

This module will allow the students to understand the design practices that are fundamental to fashion design and will form the basis for being a fashion buyer. The design procedures will give the student a good, basic understanding of the process of transforming a sketch to a garment sample form. Principles and elements of fashion design are studied in order to allow the student to design creatively yet effectively when answering a design brief.

History of Fashion Design

This module will offer an over-view of the history of fashion from the Ancient Egyptians to the Greek-Roman times, onto the “Dark Age” with the Byzantine and Norman Eras, moving on with the Medieval times and early Tudors with the Elizabethan period, to the Stuarts and right up to Baroque, Georgian and Regency eras.

History of Art

A comprehensive analysis of different art movements (pictorial art, sculpture, architecture) from prehistoric to present times and an introduction to methodologies such as research, analysing and writing skills.

FASB42 COMMUNICATING FASHION DESIGN, important skills to know for a Fashion Buyer.

Freehand Drawing 1

Study techniques of manual graphic representation. Use of linear drawing, tone and colour to denote light and shade, scale and texture, textile and material finishes etc.

Fashion Drawing 1

Study the basic skills in the craft of freehand drawing of the live form. Perspective, movement and the importance of the chosen pose. The Fashion Buyer students will have further developed tuition in freehand drawing. As the Fashion Buyer students do not produce their ideas in 3D reality, it is very important that the Fashion Buying students can communicate their ideas via a 2D drawing.

Photography 1

Introductory course covering basic techniques and addressing optical creativity from a design viewpoint.

Basic Production & Technology

Theory of the evaluation of sewing methods and production machinery, specialist equipment & attachments, plus other latest technological production methods in use in the fashion industry. Safe practice and “Health & Safety” procedures.

Print Design

A comprehensive overview of the techniques and processes in use in the creation of textile print design; All over prints, one way, repeats and borders; Colour separation for use with silk screens; Sublimated prints, roller, discharge and pigments; Digital print development and modern methods.

Illustrator 1

Industry standard software. Basic tools and processes. Relationship and differences between manual freehand presentation and CAD methods.

Photoshop 1

Introduction to one of the most popular of design software. Applications to photography and fashion design illustration.

Block and Size Specifications

Analysis of the shape of the body, garment parts and the measurements that determine their relationship. Theory of the conversion of a 2D pattern creation to a 3D garment sample.

Pattern Cutting Theory

The students on the Fashion Buying programme will learn the theory of pattern drafting and cutting processes and techniques but will not actually produce their own garments as the Fashion Design students will be doing. The tuition will take place in group practice and also on an individual study basis as necessary. The induction to (including “Health & Safety”/”Best Practice” awareness) and use of industrial machinery and equipment in atelier/workshops will be applied.

FASB FASHION BUYING PROJECTS I

Project 1

Use of combined modular skills in real-world scenarios. To include lectures, one-on-one teacher guidance and practical application of resources acquired through each term.

Project 2

The Fashion Buying students will conduct a fashion buyer research project including every step in the process from the fashion buyer having chosen the garments he/she would like to market for his/her company, to the garments actually being sold to the customers. The project will include all expenses from purchase price, shipping, custom, tax, warehouse space rent, expense to possible agent and wholesaler to the garments are being sold in the shop. A calculation of how many garments to be bought and sold and to which selling price to cover all expense and to give a minimum of a 200% profit to his company. These calculations are the most important calculations to be made for a Fashion Buyer in order to be successful in his/her profession. A wrong calculation can end in disaster. The Fashion Buyer has to pay close attention to all the details in fashion buying, such as trend, quality, cost price, retail price and calculated profit.

Group Project

Evaluation of acquired practical capacity in combination with teamwork, communication and presentation skills and their application in a professional work scenario.

Final Project

Portfolio of the skills acquired throughout the full first year of the Fashion Buying programme.

FASB51 FASHION THEORY

The History of Fashion Design 2

Study of the evolution of garments, fashion and the garment industry over the eras. The study of social and historic factors and the understanding of the frequent influence of Fashion upon such diverse areas such as politics, religion and architecture.

Fashion Marketing and Branding

Comparative Shop Reporting and methods, market trends and analysis. SWOT analysis, “Needs, Wants & Must-haves” evaluation and consideration.

As in the first academic year the Fashion Buyer students will work very much in the details including all aspects of the Fashion Buying process. Attention to all the steps in the process from trends, quality, cost, selling price and profit have to be included and evaluated in all fashion buying projects.

Fashion Lab

Students will study in detail the roles of a garment and fabric technologist and how a quality assurance team can help set the standards of quality and performance in garment making. Students will learn the different areas of garment assembly and be introduced to garment production and technical procedures.

Sustainability and Ethical Education

An analysis of the current philosophy applied to modern industry. Study of the principles of modern ethical fashion designers operating within our industry and the need to consider factory practices and employment laws. Child labour laws, minimum wage practices and their abuse and impact.

FASB52 FASHION PRODUCTION

Fashion Production and Technology

Theory of the advanced level of sewing methods and production machinery, specialist equipment and attachments, plus other latest technological production methods in use in the fashion industry. The Fashion Buyer students will be teamed with a Fashion Design student to work with and will have to make all the calculations taught for the marketing of his/her designs.

Photoshop 2

Specialisation in photographic image manipulation in fashion scenarios.

Illustrator 2

Second level of use of this software in combination with freehand fashion drawing.

Fashion Drawing 2

Students will pursue the skills and processes of designing and creating garment collections first learnt in the 1st year and will develop them further. They will develop hand-drawing skills in fashion drawing.

Runway and Styling

Evaluating differing make-up and construction techniques utilized within the commercial “Ready-to-Wear” market to “Haute Couture” and the more traditional “Tailoring” and “Bespoke” sectors.

Fashion Textile and Colour

This component will allow the students to understand the function of colour and fabric choices as part of the design practices that are fundamental to fashion design and will help form the basis for future design work and projects.

FASB53 DESIGN PROJECTS II

Project 1

Evaluating differing make-up and construction techniques utilized within the commercial “Ready-to-Wear” market to “Haute Couture” and the more traditional “Tailoring” and “Bespoke” sectors.

Project 2

As in the first year, the Fashion Buying student will have a major Fashion Buyer project running during most of the academic year. The Fashion Buying students will investigate and research every step in the process from selecting the garment for market to actually sale onto the customer. The project will include identification and understanding of all costs and expenses from purchase price, shipping, custom, tax, warehouse space rent, expense to possible agent and wholesaler to the garments/collections eventually being sold in the shop. The Fashion Buyer student will become adept in the calculation of how many garments/collections to be bought and sold and at which selling price in order to cover all expenses and to give a minimum of a 200% profit to the company. FASB63 FINAL MAJOR PROJECT AND COLLECTION

Final Major Project and Portfolio

Hands-on application of the skills acquired throughout the full third year of Fashion Buying with the culmination of a final Graduation portfolio, slideshow and EXPO presentation. Evaluation of portfolio of the major Fashion Buying project of students own choice produced during the academic year using all the taught skills during your three years of study. The project to be presented to a professional level, ready to show to potential clients.
