University Degree level. Higher Education in Fashion Design Equivalent to a Bachelor Degree

Fashion Design 1st Year

Full Course: 165 Days – (approximately 1600 hours) - 60 CP (ECTS)

Level 1: Production, analytical and technological.

During the first year of the course students will develop an understanding of the production process involved within the fashion design industry. These will include exploring and applying design principles and elements, such as scale and repetition, size specifications, pattern cutting, basic illustration methodology, traditional presentation methods, such as free hand drawing - volume and shape – as well as computer-assisted design techniques, in order to effectively present and defend both the concept and the design process by way of illustrations, mood boards, print and actual garment samples.

INITIATION TO FASHION DESIGN (14 Credits ECTS)
Fundamentals of Fashion

History of Art and Fashion Design

Block and Size Specs
Analysis of the shape of the body, garment parts and the measurements that determine their relationship. Conversion of 3D to 2D for garment creation.
Volume
The creation and development of 2D paper patterns to construct ladies wear, menswear and children’s wear. Daywear, outerwear, work wear, sportswear, eveningwear, lingerie or nightwear. Consideration to shape, proportion and silhouette. Fitting procedures.

GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION (8 Credits ECTS)
Freehand- Drawing

Techniques of manual graphic representation. Use of color and line to denote light and shade, scale and texture, textile and material etc. The use of freehand drawing in the development of research books and mood-boards.
Freehand – Life Drawing
Basic skills in the craft of freehand drawing of the live form. Perspective, movement and the importance of the chosen pose.
Freehand – Fashion Drawing
Freehand skills applied to the sketching of ‘rough’ ideas, or finished for garments or range development. Use of templates. Use of ‘layout pads’ to generate progression and movement within rough design sheets.
Technical Drawing
Basic techniques used to represent garment and garment details in a flat, technical form, true to proportion and scale. Commonly called ‘flats’, an evaluation of the rules and equipment needed to create them.
Photography
Introductory course covering basic techniques and addressing optical creativity from a Design viewpoint.

INDUSTRIAL FASHION PRODUCTION (14 Credits ECTS)
Production Technology
An evaluation of the machinery, machine attachments, equipment and materials in common use in the Fashion Industry. Safe practice and handling of all, along with the differing finishes utilized within the Ready to wear, Haute couture and Tailoring sectors.
Ethics and Sustainability
An analysis of the dominant philosophy applied to modern industry. Study of the principals of a professional Fashion Designer within an ethical industry and the need to consider factory practice and employment laws. Child labour and minimum wages.
Sustainable crops development and the use of modern textiles as alternatives to cotton. Recycling.
Print Design
A comprehensive overview of the techniques and processes in use in the creation of textile design. All over prints, one way, repeats and half drops. Color separation for use with silk screens. Sublimated prints, roller and discharge. Digital print development.

COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN (4 Credits ECTS)
Illustrator
Industry-standard software. Basic tools and processes. Relationship and differences between manual Freehand representation.
Photoshop
Introduction to one of the most popular of Design softwares. Applications to Photography and Fashion Design illustration.

PROJECTS (20 Credits ECTS)
Term Projects
Use of combined modular skills in real-world scenarios. To include lectures, one on one teacher guidance and practical application of resources acquired through each term.
Portfolio
The study of the art of assembling one’s work to accomplish a professional projection within the industry.
Final Project
Hands-on application of the capacities acquired throughout the full first year of Fashion Design.

Fashion Design 2nd Year

Full Course: 170 Days – (Approximately 1750 hours) – 60 CP ECTS

Level 2: Establishment of a signature style, Technical skills development

During the second year students will develop a deeper knowledge of the industry with projects produced required to be at industry standard specifications.
Technical Requirements of Projects and application of software and workshop techniques are evolved to an advanced level and the course will terminate with an industry standard project in the production of garments.

THE FASHION INDUSTRY (18 Credits ECTS)
The History of Fashion
Study of the evolution of garments, fashion and the garment industry over the eras. The study of social and historic factors and the understanding of the frequent influence of Fashion upon such diverse areas politics and architecture.
Marketing – Shop Report
The development of an understanding of the consumer and consumer choice. Looking at shops from a merchandising standpoint. Price points and the use of comparative shopping as a buying tool. The first look at, and developing a profile for target customers.
Marketing – Trend Report
Trend forecasting techniques. The importance of identifying world factors and their effect upon consumer trends in the coming seasons. The time scale of the Fashion Industry and trade shows for designers. Fabric forecasting, Cool-hunting and economic indicators.

GRAPHIC EXPRESSION TECHNIQUES (8 Credits ECTS)
Freehand – Life Drawing
Second level of manual representation techniques of the human body.
Freehand – Fashion Drawing
Second level of manual graphic representation of garments and their parts.
Technical Drawing
Drawing applied to the preparation of patterns.
Photography 2
Specialization in digital cameras and their use in the fashion industry. The consideration of the designed garment from a photographic perspective and the use of close-ups. Consideration of promotional material such as a ‘look book’.

COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN (4 Credits ECTS)
Photoshop 2
Specialization in photographic image manipulation in Fashion scenarios.
Illustrator
Second level of use of this software in combination with Freehand Fashion Drawing

PROJECTS (30 Credits ECTS)
Volume Project
Development of a mini capsule range of garments with implied research prior to design.
Pattern Creation - Style
Pattern creation through modeling on stand as well as flat pattern creation..
Term Projects:
Use of combined modular skills in simulated Industry scenarios. To include lectures, one-on-one Teacher guidance and practical application of acquired resources.
Final Project
Hands-on application of the capacities acquired throughout the full second year of Fashion Design.

Fashion Design 3rd Year

Full Course: 170 Days – (Approximately 1800 hours) – 60 CP (ECTS)

Level 3: Resolution of practice, management and vocational orientation.

The final year of the programme provides a platform from which students are able to fully integrate and apply knowledge and skills they have acquired during previous stages. There is emphasis on research, critical thinking, and the exploration and production of complex creative work for the purpose of building a graduate portfolio.

Pattern Creation
Flat Pattern creation and Production technology.
Style in Pattern Creation
Second level of Pattern creation through modeling on stand as well as flat pattern creation. Accent on tailoring and lingerie

Third level of manual graphic representation of the human body.
Freehand – Fashion Drawing 3
Third level of manual representation of garments.
Technical Drawing
Specialized techniques in the production of “flats”.
CAD with Illustrator 3
Specialization in the professional application of the top techniques of this software in Fashion Scenarios.

EDUCATIONAL AND VOCATIONAL ORIENTATION (14 Credits ECTS)
Vocational Orientation:
Analysis of the work field and professional opportunities in the Fashion Design industry.
Group Project
Evaluation of acquired practical capacity in combination with Teamwork, Communicational and Presentational skills and their application in a professional scenario.
Work Experience
Opportunity for real world experience in the professional work field.
